Walungu Village

CREATING A REVOLVING LIVESTOCK FUND

Walungu community works on fighting malniutrition and the lack of protein in their diet. They started working on crossbreeding of dairy goats with the local non milk ones. The community consists of 100 families. We first aim to get a goat for each of 20 families in pilot project and then to start growing from there and to get other families involved gradually. They now have 1 male, 2 females and 4 kids (3 female and 1 male) of crossbred Alpine.

PROJECT GOALS

Stage I

• To ensure sustainable quality food supply for the local community and thus to decrease hunger and malnutrition. The role of the neighbours is to:

- help the community in obtaining livestock
- help to ensure training for the livestock management
- help them to increase milk production and the quality of milk

Stage II

• To establish diary cooperative to ensure the sustainable livelihood for the community. The role of the neighbours is to:

- help the community with cooperative management training and dairy production
- help them to diversify their products and to find market for the products

HOW TO ACHIEVE THE GOALS

To make sure that the milk goats are the way to start, we launched a learning farm where the community got 3 goats and is learning by doing.
After this we will use the results from the field and make a plan for the project.

RESULTS SO FAR

The learning fam has been launched:
- A dairy goat seller has been located. The community got 3 crossbred Alpine, which will be crossed with local non milk goats.
- We found several great hard and soft copies of goat keeping manuals and Guillaume had a training at FAO. The trainers used those for the ongoing training
- We have plans for building goat sheds. Two sheds have been built and the community is working on building more
- We ensured services of local vets free of charge
- The community started putting aside some money to buy a local goat
- The seed arrived to Walungu and will be planted soon. The community is learning gardening techniques, such as raised bed and irrigation
Besides,
- We found many examples of similar projects in Africa and worldwide
- Partnerships with "Fondamu" and "Fopac" have been established
- We have a draft of SWOT analysis and breeding plan
- A local NGO held a training in good hygiene practices, and trained peer educators continue door to door education
